The Black Swan ‘Salon Des Refusés’ Art Exhibition and REMAKE competition at The Fig‏

I am not a particularly ‘arty’ person.

I work in finance by day, which can be quite black and white and truth be told my blog is my creative outlet, my rainbow.

But I do enjoy art. Strolling around a gallery can be a nice way to spend an afternoon.

And some folks are just so inventive! Now for those who do perhaps have a more artistic streak than me, does the Fig Group have news for you!

The three Fig venues (Wild Fig, Pickled Fig and Naked Fig) are about to launch two new art projects from the 3rd of September to the 14th October 2013 – Salon Des Refusés (part of the Black Swan Art Prize) and also a REMAKE competition – which encourages people to ‘remake’ one of five famous portraits.

The Black Swan Prize is now the biggest portraiture prize in WA, with an impressive $79,000 pool of prizes! Finalists will have their works displayed at the Linton and Kay Gallery (in Brookfield Place) and also Brookfield Place Lobby from the 20th to 30th September. The Salon Des Refusés is an exhibition of works that narrowly missed out on being finalists… which the Fig cafes will proudly be displaying.   Co-owner of the Fig Group, Greer Marns, is the artist amongst the Fig team and is thrilled to be supporting this high profile WA art prize. “The exhibition will display such variety and depth – come in, enjoy a Fig coffee or meal and soak up the amazing art on show,” concluded Ms Marns.

The Fig Group has been so inspired by the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture that they’re running a REMAKE portraiture competition. Everyone is encouraged to bring out the artist within and REMAKE one of five famous portraits. How entrants interpret portraiture artwork is up to them – dress up, accessorize, parody or plain old micky-take! The portraits to REMAKE are:

  • The Last Supper – Da Vinci
  • Luncheon on the Grass – Eduoard Manet
  • The Singer with the Glove – Edgar Degas
  • Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer – Gustav Klimt
  • Portrait of Celso Lagar – Amedeo Modigliani

And what got this foodie’s attention about this promotion? Well the winner of the REMAKE competition will win a free meal at any of the Fig restaurants every day for a year! Wowsers! To enter, email your REMAKE portraiture to remake@thefig.com.au from the 1st to the 30th of September.   Keep an eye on the Fig Facebook page for REMAKE inspiration and for more details, visit www.thefig.com.au
