I felt exceptionally lucky on Saturday when my foray into the food blogging scene landed me an invitation to the Food Blogger Launch Do at the recently opened Crust in Mt Lawley. On the same day as it celebrated its one month anniversiary they opened their doors to a group of bloggers and we got to sample MANY amazing pizzas and have a drink and a chat. It was the makings of a lovely Saturday lunchtime!
I had been meaning to visit Crust since it opened and on the few occasions that I had driven past they definitely seemed to be pulling decent crowd, which was very good to see. The function started at 12 on a fairly warm Saturday and as I arrived there were already a few folk inside. Crust Mt Lawley belongs to Foodie Cravings and her husband ‘Burger Boy’. Opening a franchise is always going to be a bold move. It’s going out on a limb and you know the success of the business really comes down to your own hard work. Well these two have been working very hard to establish a solid reputation in their short time of being opened. They’re working the social media angle well too and the name is definitely getting out there.
Today we were going to be treated to a 3 course pizza lunch -ooo la la! I was intrigued and also pretty hungry so this sounded great. Bought around first was some parmesan and rocket wrapped in prosciutto. Super tasty and quickly consumed 🙂 I think my appetite grew given the delicious smell of cooking pizza that hung in the air.
The entrée pizzas were more on the simpler side in terms of their toppings and off the “Starters” section of their menu (which made sense I suppose :)). There were olive tapenade with fetta squares………
or herb and garlic squares.
Having sampled both they were a resounding yum. And the comment I could hear reiterated around me was how nice the base was. Not too thick, which I prefer and plenty crispy. Very nice. They’d also catered to those gluten free among us, which was nice and good to see its an option they have available.
Following on from the entrees there was just tray after tray of delicious options brought out.
Schezuan Prawn definitely seemed to one of the more popular…. Spicy Schezuan seasoned Prawns, Fresh Capsicum, Shallots and Bocconcini on a sweet chilli base, garnished with Lemon and Fresh Chilli.
They also trialed their new Pesto Chicken Club…Marinated Chicken Breast Fillets, Thinly Sliced Prosciutto, Spanish Onions, Tomatoes, Garlic & Avocado on a Tomato base, topped with Pesto Aioli & Wild Rocket.
And the Mediterranean Lamb was a big hit! Slow Cooked Marinated Lamb, Tomatoes, Green Capsicum, Spanish Onions, Feta & Oregano on a Garlic infused base, garnished with Mint Yoghurt & Lemon.
Ooooo or the Vegetarian Supreme… Grilled Eggplant, Marinated Artichokes, Baby Spinach, Roasted Capsicum, Mushrooms, Sundried Tomatoes & Bocconcini on a Tomato base, topped with Pesto Aioli. There really was so much going on, on this pizza that you didn’t really notice there wasn’t meat!
And the Peri Peri Chicken… Marinated Chicken Breast Fillets, Shallots, Roasted Capsicum, Caramelised Onions & Bocconcini on a Tomato base, topped with Peri-Peri sauce. You may have noticed in the last three photos that there are some pizzas that have sauce swirled on top. It’s probably not my cup of tea to have that much sauce, but hey I know its what’s done now so I’d just asked for the artistic swirl to be left off. Problem solvered 🙂
I was grateful to be able to try the two on the list that had long caught my eye off te “Upper Crusts” menu – the Peking Duck… Marinated Peking Duck fillets, Steamed Bok Choy, Shallots & Sesame Seeds, garnished with Fresh Chilli on a Hoisin base. It was really delicious and I am a self proclaimed duck fan……… the hoisin sauce does get a little sweet, so I’m not sure how much of this pizza I could eat, but a few slices would definitely be delicious.
And the Five Spiced Pork Belly Pizza…. 5 Spice Marinated Pork Belly on a Tomato base, topped with Fresh Pear Slices, Wild Rocket, Crushed Walnuts & drizzled with Balsamic Glaze. Definitely an indulgence to be chowing down on pizza and pork belly in the one mouthful. Again, this for me was just a few slice pizza as it is quite heavy with all that pork. The fresh pear slices do help in part to balance that out. And I suppose the beauty of the Upper Crust Pizzas is that they are the perfect size to share with a group.
And rounding out the upscale pizza set was the Wagyu and Prawn. 4+ Marble Score Wagyu Beef, Marinated Tiger Prawns, Fresh Asparagus, Roasted Capsicum, Shallots on a Tomato base, drizzled with Hollandaise sauce, served with Cracked Pepper & Sea Salt. This was probably the only pizza I didn’t sample, I had just about reached my limit at this stage, but it was another well received pizza as I looked around the group at the happy faces munching.
Everyone was feeling more than a little comfortable at this stage, but thankfully there seemed to be a tiny bit of room left so that I could try the dessert pizzas. They were calzone style dessert pizzas and they did look nice, albeit insanely rich.
There were two varieties – a Rocky Road Calzone. Calzone filled with Mud Cake, Dark & White Chocolate, Marshmallows & Cherries, which I didn’t try on this occasion, but I did partake in the Hokey Pokey Calzone, which was filled with Caramel Cake, Honeycomb, Dark Chocolate & Whole Hazelnuts.
Wowsers – rich, rich, rich. I have no clue how someone could get through one of these solo after eating other pizza first! Would have to be my whole meal by itself. But the small amount I had on this visit was indeed very decadent…. Rich and chocolately, with beautiful crunchy bits of honeycomb. On another day when I hadn’t already consumed so much of the other types, I am sure I could do better justice to the dessert pizzas.
Finally in an inspired move they bought around little shoot glasses full of either cookies and cream icecream, chocolate mousse or mango gelati. The gelati was the perfect refreshing end to what had been an amazing meal.
Thank you to Foodie Cravings and Burger Boy for their generous invitation to this do. I had such a nice time and getting the opportunity to speak to so many other foodie fanatics was fantastic.
So to those folks out there who fancy their pizza a little more fancy, then Crust should be right up your alley 🙂
