Clancy’s Crab Fest!

‘I got crabs at Clancy’s’! As far as tag lines go, it does get your attention. And it’s true. Shark Bay crabs have descended on all Clancy’s venues in abundance and they have some excellent specials on offer for the next 12 weeks. On Wednesday in Freo and Thursdays in City Beach, Canning Bridge and Dunsborough it’s Crab Shack night! Grab a whole crab and get cracking! It’s hands on, it’s messy, it’s delicious!

Their launch event was a rowdy affair as happy punters worked their way through the new crab creations. The offerings included panko-crumbed Shark Bay crab croquettes with chorizo, corn, herbs and chipotle mayo (which were my favourite) to dramatic charcoal bunned sliders, some with an American slant with apple and jalapeno slaw, while the others were Japanese style, flavoured with pickled ginger, shallots and wasabi peas.

Guests then had a choice of being bibbed up and presented with a whole crab (Whole cleaned Shark Bay chilli crab braised in three flavoured sauce with fresh Asian herbs) or  they could partake in a crab pasta dish (Squid ink spaghetti, Shark Bay crab, roasted pepper, capers, cherry tomato, dill).

Now sure, eating a bowl of pasta might not be quite the same adventure as using a red crab claw cracker to bust into an actual crab, but it did mean I had clean hands to take a few snaps of other people getting involved with the crab cracking action. Strange priorities perhaps, but I was happy with my selection and squid ink pasta adds a lot of dark flair to a plate.

What I really enjoyed about the evening, following a recent trip to the Gascoyne, was hearing from the two Phils (Phil Clark and Phil Lori) about the Mareterram story. We are a vertically integrated agribusiness headquartered in Fremantle, Western Australia. Our focus is on providing premium quality and sustainable produce to Australian and International consumers. Mareterram is an Australian premium seafood provider that has been committed to sustainable fishing in pristine, remote locations since 1962. In WA their area of focus is the Gascoyne and tonight was all about their Shark Bay crabs. The Shark Bay Blue Swimmer Crab is sourced from a pristine, unspoilt and remote location 900km north of Perth. This world heritage listed, magical location is uniquely protected from rough seas and currents, providing ideal conditions for the Blue Swimmer Crab.

They spoke passionately about the hard working fisherman we have working in the north of this state, how their businesses are generational and that really resonated. We are so incredibly fortunate to have access to this perfect seafood in our relative backyard because of these hardworking fisherman. I’m always grateful for the long hours they put in to get this amazing produce to our plates.

So basically dinner for crab fans is sorted for Wednesdays and Thursday for the next few months.
