Ipoh Garden Restaurant

A short spiel for a short lunch….. well actually it wasn’t really that short – truth be told. It was last week and the temperature was about 300 degrees. I knew if I was walking somewhere for lunch that I wasn’t walking far. The heat was fairly confronting, smacking you in the face as soon as you left the air conditioned comfort of the building. So I walked outside and around the corner, seeing that Ipoh was open I was sold. It definitely fit the bill – location wise at least.

The temperature inside was pleasant and I found myself an empty table and waited to be served. I was quickly bought a menu and on having a quick look through, I’d initially thought of going with the chicken curry – sounded very tasty, but in the end I thought I’d give the Beef Rendang ($10) a go. Not sure why such a spicy dish appealed on such a warm day, but I also ordered a Solo to counter any heat.

The surrounds of Ipoh are fairly simple, but even on this Thursday lunchtime there was a decent crowd. It was a nice soujourn from the office and I sat sipping my Solo and reading my Kindle while I waited for my lunch.

Out in a flash and it did smell delicious. I was slightly nervous that I wouldn’t be able to handle the hotness, but luckily the sauce itself was relatively mild. The combination of that with some of the steamed rice was a total winner. The beef itself appeared to be a fairly cheap cut and quite fatty, which I was a little disappointed about, but hey for $10 I wasn’t expecting fillet steak. So I probably only made it through a third of the meat, but I put the sauce to good use with the rice.

In all, for a fast and friendly lunch, not a bad spot. I probably wouldn’t order the beef again… reluctant to order a dish knowing I’m unlikely to enjoy the meat, but hey there are other things on the menu which I’m sure are worth a go! But hmmm….. I might just trot a little further down the road to Hans…. can’t go past their chilli chicken and rice – a winner every time 🙂 Hard to say I suppose, but I know Ipoh is a fave with some of my office crew – they’ll point me in the right direction I’m sure 🙂

I have to admit that i know what you mean in regards to going to a place with some people are in the know. I know that i have been to chinese restaurants in the past with people that know the owner and there have been cases where they always get these really nice dishes that aren’t on the menu.
Maybe that’s the case with Ipoh?
